The Great Green Battle

Recently, the Seattle Sounders played the Premier League's Celtic FC for a friendly match. Although the Celtic's season has not yet begun, I would like to think that our Sounders stacked up well against a top rank team. Losing 1-0 in a peculiar referee call, may be a loss, but also a win because Seattle didn't get killed. I always love the oversee friendlies because it allows MLS soccer to measure up to Europe's Powerhouses.

Looking forward, I am excited. I am excited because there are more games lined up. The US National team will play Brasil, and the MLS All-Star team will play Manchester United. A win in both games would give the US a large boost of respect from the oversees.

What do you think? Is the MLS expanding or shrinking?

P.S. the first commentors will get their name along with their website posted on opinionews.

red bulls= Cup

The Red Bulls were already a force to be reckoned with, and now I think they have ousted the favorite for the cup. The LA Galaxy.

Why? I'll tell you why.. The Red Bulls added a new threat upfront. A threat that goes by the name of Henry, Thierry Henry.

Theirry joined the red bulls for a number of reasons. Money, fame(he's the biggest thing in new york!)< friends, and to escape from the racism in European soccer.

This is great news for the Red Bulls, Henry is an experienced striker, that has the consistency to put the balls in the net. But after the Beckham debacle, I know to not get over excited when "elderly" European stars who come to the States.

What do you think? Good or bad?

Root for the Galaxy

In America, it can be hard to find information on the MLS, but the LA Galaxy are making major leaps to change that. The LA Galaxy are dominating the league, and Donovan and Buddle bring popularity to our forgotten sport. Buddle and Donovan's return from brought a sold out crowd to the Home Depot Center. LA won 3-1 in front of 27,000 screaming fans, and the game was broadcasted on ESPN.. Twice! As you can see in my previous post Donovan has been receiving some popularity, staring on talk shows, and become something of a celebrity. It also helps that the best team in the league is in one of the largest sports markets. LA opens many opportunities for Landon, if he can tap into the Hollywood market and become a celebrity and lure celebrities to the games. Similar to what Kobe does for the Lakers. For LA fans and MLS fans, the Galaxy represent the looming Golden Age of Soccer in America soon to come.

Take me out to the PPL Park...

Incase you have not heard, the new PPL Park opened. It’s a beautiful stadium in Chester, Pennsylvania. It’s a soccer-only stadium so the Philadelphia Union won’t have to share. The stadium is located on the Delaware River, making a beautiful view.
Major League Soccer had been interested in entering one of the largest sports market for decades, but plans never came into place.

The Union designed a special entrance of PPL Park for the Sons of Ben supporters group. This entrance yields to a 2,000-seat section reserved specifically for home fans. the Park 30 luxury suites, a full-service restaurant, a concert stage, and sideline roofs designed to protect fans from bad weather. PPL Park is made up of brick and natural stone, in order to resemble traditional Philadelphia architecture.

I would love to play on such a field due to its luscious natural grass. Unfortunately for Philly, it was the sounders who scored the first goal in the jewel o f a stadium.

Honestly though, who had thought that there would be two stadiums opening in one year. On March 20th the Red Bull Arena opened, then on June 27th we have the PPL Park. And still we see more, the Wizards have begun building their new stadium and both the Dynamo & Earthquakes got approval to construct their own stadiums. This is a good sign for soccer, and I expect more popularity due to these stadiums and world cup fever bubbling over.

Ghana defeats USA

USA's World Cup run is over. Ended by Ghana in a last-second thriller. USA lost 2-1, gave up a game winning goal in the third minute of over time. Ghana will be the only African team moving on. In the next round they will face Uruguay, and I expect to see a good game from those two.

The USA did everything they couldn't do. They gave up the goal early. Kevin-Prince Boateng scored in the fifth minute on a hard shot to the near post. US has been having a lot of troubles throughout the Cup defending the early goal. They dug themselves into a hole vs Slovenia, England, and now Ghana.

A long wait until the next World Cup but we will have MLS to look forward too.
